Spanish scientific activity is experiencing a period of strong dynamism, with new calls, funding and resources that support research projects in areas as diverse as health, social sciences, water, and technology. Various administrations and institutions have announced results and support that, together, paint a picture of high competition and a clear focus on impact.
This push translates into more opportunities for teams and centers, both through public subsidies and partnerships with private companies and entities. Furthermore, the availability of cutting-edge infrastructure and specialized technical services is helping to accelerate the quality and scope of studies.
Andalusia: the University of Granada strengthens its competitive edge
Regional calls
The University of Granada is at the head of the Andalusian system in the latest provisional resolution proposal from the Andalusian Government for applied research and experimental development projects, with 49 approved initiatives and total funding of €5.801.231. It is followed by Seville (40 projects; €4,3 million), Malaga (30; €3,1 million), Cordoba (15; €1,9 million), and Almeria (13; €1,4 million), in a call that consolidates the competitiveness of Andalusian campuses.
The Vice-Rectorate for Research and Transfer of the UGR emphasizes that these results are the result of the certificate of research staff and stable policies to support talent. This leadership is in line with what has been achieved in other recent calls, in which the Granada university had already stood out in the number of grants and volume of funds, according to the ranking of universities in Spain.
Jaén: The IEG supports 24 studies with a social and legal focus.
The Institute of Giennenses Studies of the Provincial Council approves 24 proposals in its annual line of aid, this time focused on social and legal sciences, with a total budget of over €76.000. The University of Jaén is responsible for 20 of these projects, with a budget of €67.313,52, while the rest were submitted by individuals or non-profit legal entities.
The amounts range between €700 and €5.000, covering topics of great interest to the province: from the olive oil sector to education, Energy Efficiency , gender violence, the urban environment, and water management. For example, studies are proposed on olive oil tourism and community development, barriers to organic olive growing, food fraud in olive oil, socio-territorial representations of youth emigration, and the incorporation of sustainability criteria in olive oil cooperatives.

Castilla-La Mancha: IRICA adds nine projects and boosts biomanufacturing
The Regional Institute of Applied Scientific Research has about 800.000 € for nine projects promoted with support from the regional government and Next Generation funds. In the 2023 call, three initiatives were funded for a total of €282.000, while in the 2021 call, six were supported for €514.000.
The project “Smart materials in soft robotics for hand rehabilitation,” led by Professor Esther Vázquez, which pursues more accessible and comfortable devices for patients. The institute’s new biofabrication room is already operating with the DomoBIO 4A bioprinter, expanding its capacity to design biomaterials and functional structures with biomedical applications.
The use of materials with self-healing properties and response to electrical stimuli opens the door to reusable devices with skin-like behavior, with potential for multidisciplinary projects and collaboration between R&D centers and technology companies in the region.
Extremadura: 18 democratic memory projects with provincial support
The Provincial Council of Cáceres finances a total of 34.259,07 projects with €18 research and dissemination on Historical and Democratic Memory. Proposals include studies, podcasts, exhibitions, courses, and cataloging of heritage linked to the Civil War, among other areas.
The selection, published on a competitive basis, assesses the technical quality, economic viability, collaboration between entities, prior experience, and social impact, with a threshold of 20 points to qualify for grants. Priority is given to initiatives that recover women's memories or have educational applications.
Nutrition: private aid with defined deadlines and criteria
In the private sector, a new edition of aid to the nutrition research (organized by iSanidad and Herbalife), with €7.500 for the winning project and €5.000 for the runner-up. The submission period remains open until November 30th (inclusive), and the rules establish the requirements and format of the report.
The scientific committee, made up of professionals of recognized prestige, will assess the scientific quality, the teams' trajectory, and their health and social impact. In previous editions, work on chrono-nutrition and digital education, the prevention of frailty through training and caffeine, and the role of turmeric in the brain-gut axis and neuroinflammation were recognized; studies on epigenetic biomarkers associated with Mediterranean diet and osteoarthritis.
Infrastructure and collaboration: foundations for scientific advancement
The Magnetic Resonance Service for Biomedical Research of the University of La Laguna, integrated into the SEGAI, provides support scientific and technical to groups on and off campus. The equipment (valued at around two million euros) allows for the acquisition of anatomical and functional images without ionizing radiation, and is routinely used by around 16 groups (eight active this year), with occupancy rates that, depending on project load, can approach 70% in some months.
The service, with access rates for the university community of € 50 per hour, has already accumulated almost 10 TB of data, as each study can generate between 500 MB and 1 GB of images. In addition to acquisition, the technical team helps design experiments, program stimuli and synchronize tasks, and maintains agreements that facilitate access to advanced sequences functional resonance imaging; its activity is supported by budgets from the SEGAI (Spanish Seminar on the Information Society and Research Institute) and ERDF funds for scientific equipment.
In the field of water, Canal de Isabel II maintains 38 agreements with universities, public centers and startups, which favors the transfer of knowledge towards the circular economy and digitalization. The results include projects on biogas enrichment, waste recovery in wastewater treatment, the use of AI and machine learning for reservoir management, and pilot techniques for eliminating microplastics and emerging contaminants; the entity is also processing new agreements related to the treatment and recovery of wastewater using sustainable technologies.
With these actions spread across different territories and disciplines, the Spanish R&D ecosystem strengthens financing, calls and resources that allow progress in projects with social and economic impact, supported by public-private partnerships and strategic scientific services.
